Pretty Fire Article Mid-Cities Chapter

The Mid-Cities (TX) Chapter of The Links, Inc. paired with Upward Bound teens to view a selective performance at the Jubilee Theatre.  The play, Pretty Fire by Charlayne Woodard, is a true story that has captured the hearts of audiences throughout the country honoring young girls as they grow to find their own voice. It is easy to see why this dynamic performance and the familiar story line is the winner of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and the NAACP Award for best play.

 

This service and mentoring effort summoned Professional, Civic and Social women's groups throughout the DFW to invite young women to attend and who might find their voice through this powerful one woman play.

 

For many teens going to college can seem almost impossible however thanks to the Upward Bound Program the path to post-secondary education is made clearer. Participants are potential first generation college students. The program focuses on equipping these students with the necessary skills to succeed both academically and personally after high school graduation. Services include after school tutoring, academic instruction in core curriculum, TAKS/PSAT/SAT and ACT.

 

Some Upward Bound Teens are planning to attend college and majoring in Science, Technology Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) related fields making them eligible to apply for the Mid-Cities (TX) Chapter scholarship program. If granted, our scholarships continue each year to graduation with the appropriate GPA. Other students not ready for college will remain in our umbrella program; building confidence through mentoring and educational opportunities.
